The story it tells is astounding too. Goya died in France and was buried in Bordeaux. 60 years later in 1888 the Spanish asked the corpse back to Spain. When the coffin was opened, the corpse had no head. It has been stolen. The matter of the return to Spain lasted 10 years and finally the corpse returned to his native land in 1899, when Veber drew this etching. The texte says « The return of Goya in his homeland 1899 Jean Veber »
