Fra Angelico - The Last Judgement 1432-1435


I mentioned this painting about a year and a half ago but I've since found some large details of the Hell scene that I thought I'd share.

So are these photos from before and after cleaning? - because the colours go from browns in one photo to blues in the next.... it can't just be the light they were taken in....

Good point, I was wondering that myself. Makes you wonder how vibrant the colors in some of these paintings would have looked when they were freshly painted. I'd always assumed the more muted earth tone monochromatic colors of a lot of paintings from this era were a result of certain color pigments being expensive and difficult to come by back then. But a lot of these could just be layered in built up grime through the ages.
