Makes yo...Good point, I was wondering that myself. Makes you wonder how vibrant the colors in some of these paintings would have looked when they were freshly painted. I'd always assumed the more muted earth tone monochromatic colors of a lot of paintings from this era were a result of certain color pigments being expensive and difficult to come by back then.
