The Dragons Are Coming!!!

Next week will be devoted entirely to what is likely the most popular and influential monster in history, the dragon!

Chris Ryniak
I was browsing Chris's blog "Eat The Future" and found this awesome painting of a monster about to chow down. As it turns out it is for one of the best books to get released this year, "Beasts!" from Fantagraphics. And I noticed that he updated his website with new works.

Piero di Cosimo - Perseus Frees Andromeda
The paintings of Cosimo are filled with allegorical and mythological imagery. One of the more striking examples of this can be found in this scene from Greek Mythos. Learn more about this painting here. Another example of this scene can be found here.

More works by the artist can be found here.

And most people are probably familiar with this scene as it was shown in a certain Ray Harryhausen film.

Andrew Brandou
A two headed dragon licking a cat drenched in blood that is being operated on by a bear doctor, that's what I call art.

This bizarre painting titled "Autopsy" is part of a series of paintings about Hell by artist Andrew Brandou. I wonder if this artist is familiar with the works of Egbert Van Heemskerck? If you check out his site don't miss the Seven Deadly Sins or Everyone's Happier Now That You're Gone painting series.

Francois de Nome
The works of Nome are filled with fantastic architecture in spaces that resemble the landscapes of dreams. And while the elaborate, baroque and ruined architecture is generally at the forefront of the compositions, I have found a few paintings where something more sinister is on display.

The above oil painting titled "A Fantastic Architectural View" shows a crowd of people being dropped into a pit of hungry lions or dogs. Near the center of the ground you can see several of them sitting upright like gargoyles awaiting their meal, very disturbing.

This work titled "Les Enfers" is a great fantastical depiction of Hell in all it's demonic and tormented glory.

Additional works can be viewed here.

Jesse Peper
On display in this gallery are many paintings and drawings of grotesquely abstracted figures with themes of death and religion. And as mentioned to me by Matt, Peper did album covers for co-founder of Legendary Pink Dots, Edward Ka-Spel.

New Wayne Barlowe Painting - Abaddon

Here is another solid example of Barlowe bringing his oil painting techniques into the digital realm. Quote from the artist - "This digital paint-sketch was created after I spent some serious time with the Painter program on PARADISE LOST. It represents another small step towards understanding that brilliant program but is, by no means, more than an exercise."

I've been a devoted fan of Wayne Barlowe for over 10 years. His Inferno paintings have been some of the most inspiring and amazing works of art made in the past century. If you haven't already, I encourage you to purchase "Barlowe's Inferno" and "Brushfire: Illuminations From The Inferno." His fantastic depictions of Hell with all of its strange monsters is amongst the greatest and most creative ever depicted. And with the works of Hell I've shown here in the past months, that's really saying something. And there appears to be another Inferno related book by Barlowe on the horizon, "God's Demon" will be published on October 16th of this year, preorder it here.

Andrew Scott's Bug Factory

Lots of great sculptures of bugs, trilobites, cephalopods and other slimey things in this gallery. Check out the blog and the flickr gallery to see everything.
