Martin Schongauer - The Griffin, etching, 15th century

This version was printed by Israhel van Meckenem after Schongauer's version.

And another copy after Schongauer's original made in the first half of the 16th century. "Lettered with the 'M&S' monogram in imitation of Schongauer"

Etchings found at The British Museum.

It is fascinating to compare them, to see the difference between the first, where the artist is inventing as he draws, and the copies.
There is an energy in the rhythm of lines in the original that is so hypnotic that it is difficult to stop looking at it.
