1950's, Atomic Monster Mania!

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, released in 1953 and with special effects by Ray Harryhausen, is considered the film that began the atomic monster movie craze and proved there was a buck to be made by featuring giant monsters in movies. Godzilla was released a year later from Japanese film studio Toho, giving birth to an entire sub genre of Kaiju monster flicks. And while the classic monster flicks such as Dracula and Frankenstein had long since become the butt of jokes in comedies from Abbott and Costello, Hammer Film Productions was bringing them back in full color and terror.
