Ernesto Caivano

Click this and this image to see some impressive panoramic views of Caivano's strange fantasy worlds. You'll need to click the images on the page to see the larger versions.

This gallery contains more works by Cainvano, such as his peculiar imaginary birds. Then there are these weird vegetable looking characters. And the armored bird beaked character as seen above.
Giovanni Battista Nazari

This page contains the woodcuts from Nazari's allegorical book "Three Dreams on Metallic Transmutation". There's only a small handful of works on display there but the images are incredibly strange. One showing a circle of chicken like creatures wearing masks dancing around a large mule, another image shows a hydra like creature or instrument with human heads attached from over a dozen places. Then there is the creature above, many strange animals.

An extended summary of the book they are illustrations from can be read here.

Karel Thole
This fantasy/horror/science fiction book illustrator meshed surrealism and the fantastic in his paintings, creating many wild and unusual pictures in doing so. There is a great online gallery with the collected covers Thole made for the science fiction magazine "Urania". Over one thousand works can be seen in the gallery which can be viewed here. I've chosen some of my favorite works that you can click on below.

Aquaookies!

"When Star Wars was released in 1977 the world went crazy. Nearly every character and even those character's races enjoyed their chance in the spotlight. Such was not so for the wookies. Most of the race rejected popular press and exposure, retreating to and adapting to other locations to escape the bright lights of the Lucas Empire. In 1984 an oceanic explorer on a routine dive discovered what is now known as the "aquookie". Aquookies are wookies that somehow hypersped evolution and quickly adapted to the deepest parts of the ocean. Their fur has become slimy and resembles a bright tropical seaweed. Their diet and exposure to salt water has transformed their eyes to appear as jewels. No dive has ever resulted in the capture of a specimen. The aquookie figure is the result of a few rare photos shot in the mid and late 80's. Aquookies have not been spotted in over a decade. Many believe them extinct.

Aquookies are hand painted and numbered. Only 10 were made. Each one comes bagged with header card. Cost is $30 (price includes shipping in the U.S.) No international shipping available."

Douglas Walker

This gallery houses some of the more unusual fantasy landscapes I've ever seen. The nature of this world follows unusual laws that create fascinating places. Walker appears influenced by artists from the Symbolist movement, particularly Arnold Bocklin.
My favorite works from the site were the incredible blue landscapes with buildings made up of strange patterns. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see them.

Biro Art

Lots of black and white pen drawings of comical scenes involving weird creatures. Many appear influenced by Gary Larson's "Farside" and Gahan Wilson.

Check out this giant pyramid of monsters standing on top each other.

Carlito
This Cuban artist has made some significantly surreal and fascinating paintings, but his content tends to vary. So I've hand picked what I felt were the more interesting works from his gallery for you to check out below.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
JORGE CAMACHO

Camacho creates bizarre abstracted forms that resemble unusual life forms, landscapes and architecture, usually all in one. The image above resembles a tower of surreal characters with spider like arms, very strange.

Antonia Eiriz
The paintings of Eiriz resemble a kind of hell. There are charred heads stacked into walls, abstracted blackened characters with amputated limbs are shown in crude disturbing portraits. This collection of heads or masks ae especially disturbing.

Ramón Vázquez

Here is another artist of the fantastic from Cuba. I've only been able to find one gallery of his work online, I hope to find more work by this artist later. I really enjoyed this picture of a family huddled together with strange creatures surrounding them.

Vicente Hernández
This Cuban artist paints surreal worlds with architecture and landscapes that could only exist in dreams. The above image is a good example of just how bizarre his worlds can be.

Click here to see some colorful animal sculptures, some of which were made by Vicente. These creatures look like they would be at home in a Jim Woodring painting.
Williams Carmona
Most of the paintings by this artist are made on frying pans. Hieronymus Bosch imagery has been adapted into some of the works.
