I stumbled across this image recently. It is apparently being used as an illustration for a role playing project titled "Urbis". I hope to find more artwork by whoever created this. http://juergen.the-huberts.net/dnd/urbis/monsters_mm.html
The Dover book, "Bizarreries and Fantasies of Grandville" is brilliant, 266 illustrations. The title of this picture is "A volvox epidemic strikes the near-microscopic world of the scale insects" I once saw someone with this picture as a tattoo! Paul.

The artist responsible for that image is the French illustrator Grandville (real name Jean-Ignace-Isidore GĂ©rard, 1803-1847). Well worth seeking out more of his work now that you know his name!
