Someone was telling me about Kittelsen a few weeks ago... the images of a dark figure carrying a rake and a broom (there are about eight of these in that collection).
The figure is the plague, if it enters your house with the broom it sweeps everyone away, but if it enters with the rake there is a chance that someone might slip between the spikes and survive.
In one of those drawings the figure enters and has left the rake outside...

That reminds me of a documentary I watched last year about a gay man who had survived having aids while all of his friends died around him. If I remember correctly they concluded that his immunity had something to do with his ancestors surviving the plague?
