Sanctuario de Atotonilco

"A pilgrimage site to a small church known for its paintings by Miguel Antonio de Pocosangre (or so I have been told). Located near San Miguel de Allende and Delores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato.

Antonio de Pocosangre was a Mexican who learned his skills in 16th century European painting techniques without formal training."

The two week block of monsters in movie posters and pulp magazine covers begins next Sunday.

Haw Par Villa - The Ten Courts of Hell

" Haw Par Villa, formerly called Tiger Balm Gardens, was originally constructed in 1937 by "Tiger Balm King" Aw Boon Haw as a grand residence for his younger brother, Aw Boon Par, who helped create their fortune with the anagesic balm. In English, Haw Par Villa translates as Villa of the Tiger and Leopard.

Aw Boon Haw then created an entertainment park to teach and preserve Chinese values. The park's colorful collection of over 1,000 statues and 150 giant tableaux centered around Chinese folklore, legends, history, and Confucian ideology. Morality tales included classic battles between good and evil and tributes to Chinese cultural heroes such as the famous pugilist Wu Song, who tamed a ferocious tiger with his bare hands."
- quote souce taken from Singapore Mirror.

"The park contains over 1,000 statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese folklore, legends, history, and illustrating various aspects of Confucianism. These include The Laughing Buddha, The Goddess of Mercy, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and most famously The Ten Courts of Hell, a depiction of a gruesome underworld of tortures and torments set inside a 60-meter-long dragon."
- quote from Wikipedia.

There's a small photo gallery with around 10 photos from the Ten Courts of Hell here.

See more pictures of the Ten Courts of Hell on flickr here or check out all the other amazing statues on display at Haw Par Villa.

Fulltable.com has a detailed description of each of the ten courts of hell along with 10 related illustrations.

Shurale, The Tickling Monster

The above illustration is from A Russian fairy tale concerning a monster named Shurale. A few more illustrations from this book can be found here.

"There is not a single child in Russia who doesn't know who Baba Yaga, Kaschei Bessmertni and Zmei Gorinich are. They are the mythical characters of Russian folklore. In Tatar folklore, the name of Shurale is similarly well-known. This bogeyman is described as a human-like creature with a body completely covered by fur and a horn growing from the middle of his forehead. Shurale (Shoo - rah - leh , pronounced to rhyme with "sure, I lay") has long, bony pointy fingers with which he likes to tickle humans who are unlucky enough to have lost their way in the middle of the black forest (kara urman). Shurale patiently waits behind the trees for his victims. Once the abominable forest creature catches them, he usually tickles them to death."

I didn't have much luck finding imagery of this creature but I did find the below picture on google.

Jindrich Ulrich Miniature Oil Paintings

"Jindřich (Henry) Ulrich is said to be the last living Middle Ages miniaturist. He paints his little oil paintings in a style that may resemble the long forgotten techniques indeed. Even his motifs almost entirely communicate with history. Yet they are often not purely historical, JU employs his unique fantasy to create often grotesque, yet calm and contemplative images.

Almost all of JU works are painted on little wooden boards with hand-made wooden frames. Their size rarely exceeds 8 x 12 cm (3 x 5 inches)"

There's an incredible collection of Ulrich's small oil paintings on display in this flickr gallery.
