Jindrich Ulrich Miniature Oil Paintings

"Jindřich (Henry) Ulrich is said to be the last living Middle Ages miniaturist. He paints his little oil paintings in a style that may resemble the long forgotten techniques indeed. Even his motifs almost entirely communicate with history. Yet they are often not purely historical, JU employs his unique fantasy to create often grotesque, yet calm and contemplative images.

Almost all of JU works are painted on little wooden boards with hand-made wooden frames. Their size rarely exceeds 8 x 12 cm (3 x 5 inches)"

There's an incredible collection of Ulrich's small oil paintings on display in this flickr gallery.

More From The School Of Bosch

The Last Judgment - Follower of Hieronymus Bosch, 1450 - 1516

"Although inspired by Bosch's style and the fantastic imagery of his Last Judgment triptych, now in the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, the Antwerp-based painter of this large panel invented details such as the giant submerged head in Hell, as well as the fountain of life and perhaps the tree of life with an infant below it in Paradise. Christ's raised hand symbolizes his judgment. The lily beside his raised hand grants salvation, while his lowered hand and the sword signify damnation."

The scene in the lower left of the composition seems to emulate the motif of the Archangel Michael defeating Satan. And having seen literally hundreds of these Hell mouth faces, this one is certainly the most haunting. Something about the eyes, very disturbing.

Christ in Limbo - Follower of Hieronymus Bosch, 1450 - 1516

"This image of Christ rescuing Adam and Eve from Purgatory is one of the earliest imitations after Hieronymus Bosch in the John G. Johnson collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The scene is replete with bizarre creatures suffering from deformities that were thought to forebode evil in early modern Europe."

Another painting from a Bosch follower, in this scene appears Saint Anthony and his bizarre temptations..

And one more Bosch inspired painting that I found at Thinkmule's aka The Lumper, flickrpage.

Hyakkiyagyou Picture Scroll

I managed to find one site related to this scroll in Japanese. Roughly translated from babelfish the scroll is described as.. ' Hundred ogre night traveling picture scrolls ' I'm not sure if these are related to the Yokai group of Japanese spirit/demons. If anyone has more info related to this scroll I'd like to read more about it.

Images found at the Tohoku University Library online gallery.
I found this site thanks to Peacay's tip off to Morbid Anatomy related to the imagery of Japanese anatomical charts. I just started randomly clicking through the pile of Japanese links on that site and fortunately stumbled into this goldmine of weird Japanese beasts.

This is one small fragment from an elaborate Italian Polyptych altarpiece from the 1390's. This particular scene shows devils tormenting Saint Anthony. You can view the full work here.

This detail from the Altarpiece shows Saint Lawrence liberating a soul from purgatory.

M.Hutter - Games In Purgatory

Alaert du Hamel - Hieronymus Bosch Inspired Engravings

Saint Christoffel, 1459-1509

Last Judgement,1520-1580

Last Judgement - 1478-1509

You might wonder how someone could be making art from 1459 through 1580, either the historians are way off on the extended possibe dates of the works or, which is more likely due to the nature of the work, the artist is a blood sucking flesh eating vampire.

Scroll through this post of other Bosch inspired works, the engraving of the elephant is likely by the same artist and two larger examples of the 2nd Last Judgment engraving in this post can be found there..
