The Inferno
Here is an impressive engraving of Hell by an unknown Italian artist dating from 1480 - 1500.
Click on the image on the left to access the gallery. It's in French but easy enough to navigate, just click the text on the left to access a weird selection of old interpretations of monsters sometimes based on real deformed people and some imagined.

More colorful and highly stylized monsters in this gallery. These are interpretations of the more common fantastic beasts such as the Basilisk, Hydra, Chimera, Griffin, Cerebus, Centuar, Dragon, Kraken and Medusa.
One of the striking aspects of these drawings is the lack of distinct facial characteristics on those that populate the imagery. Everything is grotesquely vague, making the visions appear all the more like a passing nightmare.
