Jean Benoit
"One of the most exciting members of the French surrealists during the 40's and 50's, and up till the present day, Jean Benoît was a performer of unsettling activities, bazaar rituals... most notably the Exécution Du Testament Du Marquis De Sade in 1959. Strange drawings, macabre sculptures, even now he has one eye in the shimmering spectral cities of the dark world, and one eye that casts a pitch black shadow in the sunlight of the everyday. He sees all with his blood that masquerades as a window..."

Benoit's unique sculptures stand apart from most other works associated with the Surrealist movement in their absolute nightmarish appearance. The costumes designed by Benoit, two of which can be seen here and one here, have been a source of great inspiration in my own work. Click here to see a character I designed which was inspired by Benoit. Other artists which I've noticed to be inspired by his works are Giger and Axel.

The two galleries I've found online with the works of Jean Benoit can be seen here and here.

Donna Balma
Lots of unusual environments in these paintings and drawings. Some of the best art on the site is on the archive page.

The Zymoglyphic Museum

"The world's only repository for the study and display of Zymoglyphic art, artifacts, and natural history. The creative output of the region relies mainly on the assemblage of natural objects. The museum also presents special exhibits on related topics in natural object assemblage, and maintains a curiosity cabinet of items that reflect the spirit of Zymoglyphic culture."

Lots of unusual objects on display at this online museum. Check out this shoe box museum with strange creatures checking out the art.

The peculiar sculptures on display on this and this page are some of my favorite works from the site.

And don't miss the curator's blog.

Click here to see Easter's clay animated short "Bogglewart Forest".
The second image down on this page has a great drawing by Easter.

Rusty Nail Studio
Here is the art blog of artist Tom Carey. Apart from his prints and drawings there's also images in here of the cartoonish sculptures of Jamie Easter. Click here to read more about the artists.

Walmor Correa
This Brazilian artist has taken his ability to create intricately detailed scientific illustrations in a more fantastic direction as can be seen above. The first three images on this page have some very bizarre creatures with anatomies mixed with those of other more normal creatures. On this page you'll find images of a catfish headed penguin. And this page takes you to a gallery of many other strange creatures.

Seeing these creatures in this context seems to make them appear more real, as though someone had actually captured and studied them.

The "Cryptozoology" section has some great anatomical illustrations of strange looking individuals.

Artist found thanks to Hugo Strikes Back!
